OUR BEST FRIENDS, By: Rita Sullivan
Have you ever wondered why we have service and therapy dogs? Well, owning a dog provides a large array of health benefits. Research has shown that simply petting a dog lowers the stress hormone cortisol. Social interaction with dogs increases the level of the feel good hormone oxytocin. One study showed that 84% of individuals suffering from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder reported a significant reduction in symptoms and 40% were able to reduce their medications by having a therapy dog. Dogs are faithful and lack judgment, which are the attributes of a great friend. People with furry friends tend to spend more time outdoors, exercise more often and feel loved. Oh yes! Cats can help reduce stress as well leading to living a longer and healthier life.
