Current Topics in Immigration Law
Thank you to attorneys Kevin Stout and John Rafael Almaguer of Stout Law LLC for an informative and thought-provoking presentation on immigration law.
The discussion highlighted how immigration policy has shifted over time at both the federal and local levels. Earlier approaches focused enforcement on serious crimes while allowing more discretion and relief for lower-priority individuals, including expanded asylum considerations for women and children fleeing violence.
More recently, policies have tightened amid increased migration, with evolving enforcement strategies and reduced use of discretion. Current approaches emphasize broader enforcement, increased detention efforts, and expanded use of technology such as data tracking, facial recognition, and other tools.
The presentation also raised important questions about legal processes, including the distinction between judicial and administrative warrants, and broader concerns around privacy, civil rights, and system capacity.
A timely and complex topic, and we appreciate the opportunity to better understand the changing landscape.
