Club Meeting July 23rd -What’s Going On with our Criminal Justice System

Sheriff Nathan Sickler recently shared insights into the state of our local justice system. One key point he raised: there’s a growing need for Oregon to re-criminalize drug possession. Doing so would give law enforcement more tools to address crime and improve public safety. Since drug use is often closely tied to criminal activity, this change could help officers intervene more effectively.

That said, we still face significant challenges. Our jail lacks the capacity to hold individuals for extended periods, and a shortage of public defenders continues to delay case processing. Still, we’re seeing signs of progress—and the data is beginning to reflect that shift in the right direction.

It’s encouraging to see momentum building for change.
