March 12th Recap Medford Water Commission

This week the Medford Rogue Rotary Club welcomed Brad Taylor, General Manager of the Medford Water Commission, who provided an informative look at where our community’s water comes from and why long-term investment in our water system is critical.
The Medford Water Commission provides water service to Medford and surrounding partner cities, serving a regional population of roughly 150,000 people. Our water primarily comes from Big Butte Springs, a remarkable natural source that has supplied the region for more than a century. The system is supplemented by water from the Rogue River, treated at the Duff Water Treatment Plant, which helps ensure reliability during periods of high demand or reduced spring flow.
Taylor explained that the community is at a crossroads, facing several important challenges that require investment now. Key infrastructure such as the Big Butte Springs pipeline, the Capital Hill Reservoir Complex, and the Duff Water Treatment Plant are aging and require modernization to maintain reliability for the region.
Population growth across Medford and surrounding cities is also increasing demand on the system. At the same time, climate factors such as drought have resulted in reduced flows from Big Butte Springs, meaning the system must rely more frequently on the Rogue River supply.
In addition to these pressures, regulatory requirements are increasing the need for infrastructure that can withstand natural disasters and other emergencies. Taylor emphasized that preparing the system for the future requires a consistent cycle of investment in capital improvements.
Importantly, the Medford Water Commission operates as a self-funded utility, with projects primarily supported through customer water bills, supplemented by occasional grants.
Rotarians appreciated the insight into the infrastructure that quietly supports our daily lives. The presentation highlighted the importance of planning today to ensure a reliable and resilient water supply for the Rogue Valley for generations to come.
