Meeting Recap
Understanding Human Trafficking in Southern Oregon
At this week’s meeting, Lauren Tratham provided an eye-opening presentation on human trafficking, separating common myths from the realities of exploitation in Southern Oregon.
One of the biggest takeaways was that trafficking rarely looks like the stranger kidnappings often portrayed in the media. Instead, traffickers frequently exploit existing relationships and vulnerabilities. Lauren discussed several forms seen in our region, including familial trafficking, pimp-controlled trafficking, illicit massage businesses, and labor trafficking, particularly within agriculture and illegal grow operations.
The presentation also highlighted how trafficking intersects with poverty, homelessness, domestic violence, sexual assault and displacement following disasters. Strong families, access to education and community support can all play a role in reducing vulnerability.
Lauren emphasized that addressing demand for commercial sex is an important part of prevention and encouraged community members to talk openly about exploitation and its impact.
Members also learned how to recognize potential warning signs and report concerns safely. Suspected trafficking should be reported rather than confronted directly, with 911 used when someone is in immediate danger.
Thank you to Lauren for helping Medford Rogue Rotary better understand an issue that can be difficult to see—but is very much present in our communities.
