Did You Know….? RLI
Rotary Leadership Institute: Growing Leaders, Strengthening Clubs
Have you ever wondered how some Rotarians seem to know exactly how to turn ideas into action, lead projects effectively, and connect Rotary’s local work to a much bigger global mission? One of the best tools Rotary offers for developing those skills is the Rotary Leadership Institute, commonly known as RLI.
RLI is a multi-district leadership development program designed to help Rotarians grow as leaders, strengthen their understanding of Rotary, and bring fresh energy back to their clubs. While it is recommended by Rotary International, it is not a formal Rotary International training requirement. Instead, it is an interactive learning experience built “by Rotarians, for Rotarians.”
Unlike traditional lecture-style training, RLI focuses on discussion, collaboration, and practical leadership skills. Participants learn alongside Rotarians from other clubs and districts, creating opportunities to exchange ideas, solve challenges, and build lasting Rotary connections.
What Do You Learn at RLI?
The program is divided into three progressive parts, typically completed over separate sessions. Topics include:
- Leadership styles and team building
- Rotary’s global structure and resources
- Membership engagement and attraction
- Strategic planning
- Public image and communications
- Ethics and vocational service
- Creating impactful service projects
- The Rotary Foundation and international service
Courses are designed to help members become stronger leaders both inside and outside of Rotary.
Why Attend?
RLI is valuable for:
- Newer members wanting a deeper understanding of Rotary
- Committee chairs and future club leaders
- Members looking to become more engaged
- Anyone who wants to sharpen leadership and communication skills
Many Rotarians say RLI helped them better understand the “why” behind Rotary and gave them renewed enthusiasm for service. The program also introduces members to the broader Rotary world beyond their own club.
A Great Fit for Medford Rogue Rotary
As our club continues implementing goals around member engagement, leadership development, communication, and strategic growth, leadership training opportunities like RLI directly support those priorities. Our club’s strategic plan emphasizes developing engaged members, strengthening communication, and building future leaders.
RLI aligns especially well with our focus on:
- Expanding leadership opportunities
- Increasing member participation
- Building stronger committee engagement
- Supporting innovative service and communication efforts
Our club already has incredible leaders. RLI is one more way to invest in the next generation of Rotary leadership while bringing new ideas and energy back to Medford Rogue Rotary.
